Snake Protection
Each year September 19th is declared as an International Snake Bite Awareness Day.
Australia is home to some of the world’s most deadly creatures including snakes. The most dangerous Australian snakes include the Inland Taipan, Eastern Brown Snake, Coastal Taipan, Tiger Snake, beaked Sea-Snake, Death Adder, Western Brown, and several species of sea snake.
Each year, between 81,000 and 138,000 people die from snakebites, and up to 40,000 people are left permanently disabled or disfigured because of being bitten by venomous snakes. For many victims, years of debt and mental illness are almost guaranteed. As such, the timely application of first aid treatment for a snake bite is critical in the outcome of a patient.
Be prepared
In Australia, it is best to be prepared and practice giving first aid for snake bites. Carrying a snake bite kit with you is the best insurance policy for surviving a bite from a venomous snake. Buy a kit that you can easily take with you while out walking. Kits are compact and lightweight, so they are easy to carry. In addition to this, it is also recommended to wear snake safe gaiters.
